Just like in our world the global economy on Krathal is dependent on shipping by sea, but unlike our world the environmentally-conscious arpines choose to ship freight across the seas the traditional way: by sail. Even well past Krathal's modern-equivalent era 80% of movement of goods and services across the oceans is still conducted by sailing vessels, such logistical infrastructure is supported and made possible by a combination of focus on local economics as well as arpine ideology reducing desire for speedy goods.

Despite the seemingly archaic mode of transport things have still come a long way since the days of old wooden skipper ships. Newer sailing cargo sailing ships rank anywhere between 500 and 5000 tons and are packed with the latest technology such as weather radar, satellite navigation, and communications systems. Water-drag generators and rechargeable battery banks provide power to internal electrical systems while a hydraulic steering system and manually-operable sails makes smooth operation of the ship possible even when power is completely lost.

Each ship is run as a worker cooperative with around 5-15 crewmembers depending on ship tonnage. The cooperative may be a temporary assortment of individuals, a family or multiple families, or a long-standing professional crew. The crew cooperative owns the vessel they operate as long as it's in their use and it's not uncommon for a vessel to be owned by many crews throughout it's lifetime. Ships left vacant are, after some time, claimed by the Krathal Maritime Council who then make the decision to assign a crew or to scuttle or scrap the abandoned ship. Pay is split between the crew upon arrival to port with the pay split amounts being decided by the crew in an agreement or vote.

And here we are to a young newly appointed captain standing in the wheelhouse steering his vessel through a large hurricane. This was not his first rodeo through severe storms or dangerous weather but it was his first while at the helm. He did not plan for this but no one really could, Krathal’s atmosphere is prone to large and rapidly-forming storms and often all that can be done is to prepare for any potential encounters as the seas can never be trusted to hold back. But no matter the weather or circumstances there was a run to be made and a crew to keep safe.
